Daedalus AI Safety Hacks
5,000 years ago, an age-old tale portrayed the account of Daedalus, a genius inventor who crafted wings of wax for his son, Icarus, who then ascended too near to the sun and was consumed. DASH aims to promote the same advancement of pioneering tech, while sending a caution regarding safety and existential threats.

Our Motivation
How do we align increasingly capable AI systems with human values and preferences? How do we ensure AI is fair and unbiased, or is it better for AI to be biased? How do we protect our privacy from AI? And how do we understand and ensure AI does exactly what we intend?
These are all questions that need to be eventually answered — but we cannot afford to wait. The recent AI boom is just the tip of an iceberg for what's to come. As we enter the dawn of the age of AI, we believe proper AI alignment is critical for the humanity's future. To help the development of safe, ethical, and moral AI, we launched this hackathon to educate more young people - high school and college students - about this pressing problem.
This is not just a typical virtual hackathon. While there are plenty of awards to be won and recognitions to attain, we ultimately hope that every participant will take away some new knowledge about the current problems in AI safety and alignment. Through our workshops, speakers, and office hours, we will educate participants on both the technical and governance aspects of the problem and prepare you to independently explore further. The future belongs to the young.
A competition for everyone.
Regardless of your skill level with AI, you will find your place in this hackathon. We believe the problem of AI safety benefits from a breadth of ideas and encourage all students in high school and college to participate. No programming experience needed.
All paths lead to Rome.
You will choose to compete in one of two tracks: a technical track, and an ideathon track that focuses solely on the ideas of the implementation. We do not want anyone with excellent ideas to be barred by the technical aspect of this challenge.
Explore the biggest problems of AI safety.
As a participant, you will learn about the most pressing problems of rapidly advancing AI systems — how do we understand and control them — from both empirical and theoretical perspectives through world class speakers and industry professionals.

Mentorship & Teams
During the competition, there will be a short networking session to find teammates. Teams will have upwards to four people. Mentors in technical fields (e.g. ML, alignment specifics) will be provided at request.
The hackathon is tentatively scheduled to take place from March 7-9, 2025. Outside workshops/speaker events, you may hack with your team any time in that time frame.
Time & Dates
Winners and runner-ups of each track will share the XXX in prizes. More information to be released on Devpost with sponsors.
